[New course starting 18 Dec] Introduction to Mahayanese Buddhism (1) – Knowing Guan Yin: Theory and Practices

Guan Yin is a bodhisattva familiar to all Chinese.  While we are familiar with this bodhisattva, how much does one know about her?  This 6-week course will lead you into an in-depth study of Guan Yin and the related sutras, in particular, the Universal Gate Sutra 普門品  and practices.

Teacher:  Ven Faxun

Background of the teacher

Born in Singapore, Venerable Fa Xun graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic where she was President of its Buddhist Society.  In 1992 she was ordained in Taiwan by Venerable Wu Yin of Luminary Bhikshuni Sangha(香光尼僧团), where she also went through five years of monastic training in the institute. Upon completion of her monastic training, she returned to Singapore and conducted adult’s and children’s Dharma classes in English and Mandarin.   In 2001, Venerable  continued to pursue her education by doing a Bachelor of Arts and Education degree at University of Western Australia and in 2009 she completed her Honours Degree with a thesis entitled “The Other Path:  The Bhikkhuni Quest for Liberation.”  In 2011, Venerable authored the book “One Life, Five Precepts: Buddhist Ethics for Modern Living”. Currently Venerable is doing her Master in Art (Applied Buddhist Studies) at Nan Tien Institute in Australia.  She also teaches at various Buddhist centres in Singapore, Malaysia and Western Australia, and contributing articles to Buddhist magazines and academic  journals.
